The Effect Of Sawdust Treated With Zymomonas Mobilis On The Performance Characteristics Of Red Sokoto Goats
ABSTRACT
An experiment Was carried out to investigate the effects of feeding
treated sawdust with Zymomonas mobilis as formulated feed component; and was
compared. to the untreated sawdust. Nine red Sokoto goats were used in the
study which, were distributed to 3 treatments by 3 replicates. The animals were
fed ad I/h/lull? diets T, T2, and T with 15% untTeated sawdust, 15% treated
sawdust and 20% treated sawdust respectively with clean water given. They wore
weighed at the beginning of the study and at weekly intervals for 42 days. Feed
were also measured before giving for data collecti.jn. The result on daily
weight gain vias highest in T2(101g) with treated sawdust (P>O.05). White
the highest ted intake was observed in 'F3 (610g), where the best feed
conversion ratio of 1.77 was noted in T2 (P>0.05). Based on the economic
benefits studied, the feed cost/kg and cost/kg goat produced were generally
better in 13(i5.50) and T (143452.24) respectively (P<0.05). The gross profit and profit were generally highest in T2 (146687.64) and rf2 (3 121. 54) respectively (P>0.05).
Therefore, it is recommended that treated sawdust should be included at 15% and
20% in goat diets as component of formulated feed. That further study should he
done on the optimal levels of inclusion for the treated sawdust as component of
goats formulated diets.
