ABSTRACT
Swabs from wounds sites, sinks, disinfectant, water and hands of personnel in eight wards of the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia were investigated for contamination by bacteria. Specimens from patients were collected on admission into the hospital and 48 hours thereafter. Samples were analyzed using standard microbiological methods and the disc diffusion technique was used on all isolates for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Of the 4Q0 wound swab samples collected, 64 samples (16%) had bacterial growth. Seven (3.5%) of the samples had growth on admission into the hospital. A total of eight bactenal species were ,solated from wound sites. These were identified as Escherjchia colt Kiebsiella sp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epic/ermidis, Enterococcus sp, Proteus vulgaris and Enterobacter sp. Samples from hands of hospital personnel, sink, water and disinfectant yielded nine bacterial isolates. These were identified as Escherichia col Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella sp, Enterobacter sp, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, acillus sp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus sp. Majority of the isolates had multiple antibiotic resistance. Statistical analyses of results showed that there is a positive correlation between bacterial growth from wound and. Results form a baseline data for designing measures for the control and prevention of antibiotic resistant nosocomial infections in The Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria.
