ABSTRACT

The study specifically investigated the effects of self-control on reduction of excessive alcohol consumption among in-school adolescents in Abia State. Six research questions were raised and six null hypotheses tested at 0.05 levels of significance guided the study. The study adopted a quasi-experimental research design using a 3x2 matrix. A total number of 30 male SSII in-school adolescents drawn from a population of 50 SSII in-school adolescents from Ohanze Isiahia Secondary school through a simple random sampling technique, made up the t sample for the study. Four instruments namely, Adolescent personal data inventory (APDI), Excessive alcohol drinking questionnaire (EADQ), Excessive alcohol drinking history questionnaire (EADHQ) were adopted revalidated and used for screening, classification and evaluation of the subjects at the pre-treatment, treatment, post-treatment and follow-up assessment periods. Two experimental groups were exposed to experimental conditions while control group was not. Data obtained from the pre-treatment, treatment, post-treatment and follow-up were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions while analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 levels of significance. Major findings from the study indicated that self-control technique and multimodal therapies were effective to reduce the level of alcohol consumption of the subjects. Significant difference exists in the level of consumption rates between high self-concept subjects and low self-concept subjects. Among the educational implications of the study was that reduction in the level of alcohol consumption depends on the use of self control and multi-modal therapies. It was thus recommended that more resident guidance counsellors and school psychologists be exposed to the use of behavioural therapies
