ABSTRACT.

A field experiment was conducted to determine the response of two maize varieties to different nitrogen levels at research farm o 'Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. Four nitrogen rates consisting of 0 kg N/ha, 40 kg N/ha, 80 kg N/ha, 120 kg N/ha and two varieties of maize (Oba Super I and Bende White) were used in this study. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The data collected were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and means were separated by the standard error of difference (s.e.d). The ANOVA showed that the grain yield was not significantly (P>0.05) affected by varieties. However, grain yield increased with increase in N applied up to 120 kg N/ha. Based on these findings, Oba super I the highest yielding varieties may be recommended to be grown in this part of the country.
