ABSTRACT

A 21 day feeding trial involving eighty four (84) five week old broiler chicks was conducted to evaluate the performance and carcass characteristics of broiler finisher birds fed raw bambara groundnut offal (BGO) meal supplemented with synthetic amino acids lysine and methionine. The broiler were divided into four groups of 21 birds each. Each group was subdivided into 3 replicates of 7 birds each and the birds were assigned to treatments in a completely randomized design. The birds were weighed at the beginning of the experiment and weekly thereafter. Experimental birds and water were provided ad-libitum basis and feed intake was recorded daily. The chicks were fed four formulated diets such that raw bambara groundnut offal constituted 30% of diet 2,3 and 4. Treatment 1 (control) contained no bambara groundnut offal inclusion, and no amino acid supplementation. Treatment 2 contained 0.1% lysine and 0.1% methionine, treatment 3 contained 0.1% lysine and 0.2% methionine and treatment 4 contained 0.2% lysine and 0.2% methionine inclusion. The result of the experiment showed that average daily feed intake and cost of production of birds differed significantly (p<0.05), among birds fed the diet. Mortality , feed conversion ratio, average daily gain, cost bof a kg weight gain, revenue, gross margin, cut parts and organs except breast did not differ significantly (p>0.05). the result ofthis trial suggest that raw bambara groundnut offal could be incorporated with methionine and lysine supplementation at 0.10% each.
