ABSTRACT
Studies on the
adsorption capacities of bamboo-based activated charcoal (BBAC) and bamboo dust
(BD) onto lead (11) and Cadmium (11) ions were carried out. Effect of various
process parameters has been investigated by following the batch adsorption
technique. Results revealed that the percentage removal of Pb2+ and Cd2+ from
aqueous solutions increased with increase in particle size of the adsorbents
(0.3 mm - 0.6 mm). As initial pH of the aqueous solution was increased, the
percentage removal of the metal ions increased optimally. Temperature variation
showed percentage removal increasing between 303K (30°C) and 323 (50°C) and
decreased at 70°C. At varied contact time, the percentage removal of the metal
ions increased and maintained a constant adsorption at 90 min. percentage
removal of lead (11) and Cadmium (11) decreased with increase in initial metal
ions concentrations of 20 mg/L, 80 mg/L. adsorption capacity trend for the
various parameters studied with BBAC and BD showed Pb2+ > Cd2+. The
adsorption data were modeled with the Van’t Hoff thermodynamic equation,
Pseudo-first and second order equations, Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms and
the models were found to be very applicable. Negative values of AG°ads depicted
the feasibility and spontaneous nature of the adsorption process while AH°ads
indicated the exothermic nature of the process. Adsorption of lead (11) and Cd
(11) ions by bamboo-based activated charcoal (BBAC) and bamboo dust (BD) was
found to be favourable and hence could be employed as alternative adsorbents
for wastewater/ aqueous solution treatment.
