Proximate Composition And Anti-Nutritional Properties Of Non-Conventional Legumes Used In Livestock Feeding

ABSTRACT

Five selected forages of non-conventional legumes, namely Cajanus cajan, Mungbean, mucuna Ghana, Mucuna conchinchinensis and Mucuna rajada were analyzed for nutritional and anti-nutritional properties. They were harvested at 3 stages of growth (emergent, 4 and 8 weeks) before' being subjected to nutritional evaluation. The antinutritional properties examined were phytate, oxalate, tannin, saponin and hydrocyanic acid, while the proximate components were crude protein, crude fibre, nitrogen-free extract, moisture content and ash. Results obtained showed that while crude fibre generally increased with age, the crude protein, nitrogen free extract and moisture contents were significantly highest (p<O.05) for all forages at emergent stage. Contrarily, the anti-nutritional factors were of lowest concentration for all forages at the emergent stage and this tended to increasewith age. Mungbean had the highest CP content of all, at the emergent stage (16.80%) and similarly for Mucuna Ghana (15.40%) and Mucuna rajada (13.30%). Mucuna Ghana had the highest concentration of all ant nutritional properties.
