ABSTRACT

Obviously, intestinal parasites of ruminant animals particularly cattle have become a global issue with alarming health and economic concern especially in developing countries. Studies have revealed prevalence rates of these parasites in different animals. The prevalence study of the intestinal Protozoa and Helminths in cattle was carried out using the cattle sold and slaughtered at Ubakala abattoir. Wet mount and floatation techniques were used to microscopically view the eggs/cysts of the parasites. In this study, it was revealed that Protozoa and Helmjnth intestinal parasites occur among the cattle sold at the Abattoir. A total number of two hundred and sixteen (216) cattles were examined. The study show that out of 216 cattle examined, 211 (97.69%) were infected out off which 187(87.57%) have both Protozoa and Helminths while 24 (11.11%) have Helminths alone. Among the Helminth parasites observed, Nematode have a prevalence of 56.87% (with Toxocara vitulorum having 7.11, Trichuris ovis 3.32 and Strongyloides papillosus 46.44%) and Cestode 43.13%. In the case of the Protozoa, Coccidians (Eimeria bovis) and Entamoebae (Entamoeba co/i) have prevalence rates of (47.57%) and (52.41%) respectively.
