ABSTRACT

The prevalence of Malaria and Typhoid fevers as co-infection among residents of ObudaAba Autonomous Community, Aba-South was studied between the months of July and September 2014. Out of 245 blood samples collected and examined, the result obtained revealed that children between the age group of l-15years had the highest rate ofinfection for both Malaria (24.5%) and Typhoid (21.6%) while the age group 61 years and above had the I least (9.4%). 40.8% ofthe subjects tested positive for both Malaria and Typhoid fever. About 33.5% believed that mosquito bite may be responsible for Malaria disease while 28% responded that intake of contaminated food and water is the possible cause for Typhoid infection. 34.5% of the sampled population visit the laboratory when very critically sick, while 24% responded that the visited the laboratory when they are critically sick. On preventive measures adopted 27% agreed that routine treatments with drugs are better preventive measures, 16.5% agree to safe food and water while 10% indicated on the use of more than one practices as preventive measures. The need for health education with appropriate personal hygiene are advocated as free Typhoid and Malaria treatments as well as free treated bed nets are made available to the people.
