Potentials of Plantain farm components as Feed for Grower Bulls:- Mazi, Chinma A.
ABSTRACT
A study was done on the plantain farm
components as farm animal feed. The chemical composition was studied for ripe
plantain with peels, unripe plantain peels, ripe plantain peels, unripe
plantain with peels and plantain pseudo stem with leaves as farm animal feeds.
The plantain farm components have moderate level of protein from 7% to 3.6% (P<0.05), where high fats were noted (P><0.01) except for the unripe plantain with peels and ripe plantain with peels which have values of 0.72% and 1.07%, respectively. They are excellent source of ash observed (P><0.01) which is the index of mineral composition. They were observed to have high energy values and good quantity of organic matter (P>0.05).
The nitrogen free extract is generally high (above 50%), except for the plantain
pseudo stem with leaves which has 20.77%. The daily protein values ofthe
plantain farm components indicated that 145.71g to 283.33g of the different
samples would meet the requirement of 10.2% for bull of about 300kg weight
intended for growth and for maintenance purpose.
