ABSTRACT
Gongronema latifolia is a
leafy vegetable used as a medicinal plant and a food ~ lasoning in both rural
and urban areas. The leaves arc used in cooking while the cm is boiled and the
inf us ion is drained for drinking. The infusion is believed lo 1 Ip reduce
blood sugar level. Sometimes, the leaves arc chewed raw. hytochemical analysis
of (he stem and leaves showed the presence of tannins, Jkaloid, flavonoid and saponin
using the AOAC methods. The phytochcmical halysis of the powdered leaves of
Gongronema latifolia showed high pncentration of tannin, moderate concentration
of saponnin and alkaloid and low jpncentration of navonoid. The result showed
that the quantity of tannins is more [gnificant in the leaves than in the stem
while the quantity of saponin in the stem ~ higher than that of the leaf. The
navonoid quantities of the leaf arc more p!niftcant to the flavonoid quantities
of the stem. The alkaloid quantity or the tear }$ higher than the quantity
found in the stem. People consuming this vegetable hould be cautious of the
implications of consuming very high quantities of these emicals.
