ABSTRACT

The chemical constituents of Uvaria chamae (P. Beauv) and Clerodendron splendens (A cheval) were studied. Phytochemical screening of ethanolic root extract of U chainae revealed the presence of alkaloids (8.1mg 100g'), tannins (0.4mglOog'), cardiac glycosides (0.12mg100'), phenols (0.1mg100g') and flavonoids (5.7mg100g'). The mineral constituents from U chamae include calcium (1.8mg 100g'), magnesium (0.67mg100g'), potassium (0.88mg 100g'), phosphorus (0.48mg100g'), sodium (2.4mg 100g'), iron (16.2mg100g'), zinc (0.75mg 100g') and chromium (0.12mg 100g'). Cadmium was not detected. The vitamin content includes niacin (0.40mgl00g'), ascorbic acid (2.lmgioog'), thiamine (0.l6mgloog') and riboflavin (0.06mg100g). Phytochemical content of Clerodendron splendens revealed the presence of alkaloids (5.4mg loog'), phenols (0.08 mg 100g'), flavonoids (0.7mg100g), saponins (21mg 1 00g-'), and tannins (3.6mg 100g'). The mineral content comprises calcium (2.2mglOog'), magnesium (1.61 mgi 00g') phosphorus (3 .8rng1 00g'), potassium (1.3mgloog'), sodium (2.6mg 100g') and iron (5.6mgloog'). Chromium, cadmium and manganese were not detected. The vitamin content include, ascorbic acid (15.30mg bOg'), niacin (0.9mgloog'), riboflavin (0.13mg100g') and thiamine (0.80rng100g'). The ethanolic extract of U Chamae and C. Splendens exhibited anti-microbial, anti- inflammatory and oxytocic activity on albino rats confirming the use of these plants in herbal medicine.
