ABSTRACT
The
soils of an abandoned municipal waste dump site which has been converted to agricultural
land at lsingwu in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State were
studied. Three profile pits each of 100cm depth were dug along a toposequence
on the land. The profile pit P1 was dug at on the crest, while P2 and P3 were
on the middle and down slope respectively. Soil samples were collected at 10cm
intervals from each of the profiles. The physico-chemical properties of the soils
were determined. Heavy metal (Pb, Ni, Cr, Cd, As, Cu, and Zn) contents of these
soils and of cassava and cocoyam harvested from the land were also determined.
The result of the study showed that the mean percentage organic matter content
were high and also there were variations in the physicochemical properties of
the soils. Of all the seven (7) heavy metals studied, the highest mean concentration
was recorded for Pb while the least mean concentration was recorded for Cd in
both plants and soils. Also arsenic (As) was detected in the root of cassava.
There was the tendency of heavy metal to accumulate in the soils of the down
slope profile pit P3. When the individual profiles were examined, highest mean
concentration of Pb was recorded for the profile P3 on the down slope. No regular
variation of the heavy metals was observed down the three profiles studied. Correlation
analysis between the heavy metals in the soils and soil factors indicated that
a significant and positive correlation co-efficient was observed between clay
and Cr and between sand and Cd, and sand and Zn. Soil pH correlated negatively
and significantly with Pb. The relationships between organic matter and Pb, Cr,
Cu and Zn were all positive.
