ABSTRACT 

This was a cross-sectional study carried out to assess the physico-chemical and microbiological quality of commonly patronized sachet water brands in MOUAU. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain information on socio-demographic characteristics of respondents and their perception of quality of sachet water, types of treatment given to sachet water, and to identify the commonly patronized ones. The commonly patronized brands were subjected to physico-chemical analysis (odour and taste, pH, turbidity, total acidity, and temperature). Microbiological analysis was carried out on a total of twenty-four (24) samples, eight (8) samples from each brand. Data was analyzed using frequency, percentages, means (± standard deviation), and ANOVA. The result showed that higher percentage of the respondents (5 1%) were between the ages of 21-25 years. Brands K (57.38%), M (21.31%), and U (13.17%) were the three (3) commonly patronized brands. The study also showed that about one-third (3 7%) of the respondents preferred the indicated brands because of better quality. The results further showed that the physico-chemical parameters (odour, taste, turbidity, and total acidity) fell within recommendations, whereas the pH of all the samples was below 7.00 indicating acidity. A total of seven (7) samples were found to have bacterial growth. Organisms isolated were Escherichia coli and Streptococus fecalis. The presence of fecal coliforms in some of the sachet water samples indicates poor quality of some samples sold in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
