ABSTRACT
The study examined the patterns
and Nutritional status of farmers in lkwuano Local Government Area of Abia
State. The research was carried out using total of eighty two (82) farmers who
were randomly selected. One hundred and twenty (120) questionnaire were
pie-tested and validated and were used to obtain information on food habit,
dietary intake. Anthropometric characteristics were used to determine their
nutritional status. This included body mass index (BMl), age, height, weight,
arm circumference, triceps skinfold thickness and mid arm muscle circumference.
Their food intake was also determined using 24 hour — dietary recall. The
farmers have high intake of cassava. Breakfast was the highest meal that was
skipped. The most common reason for skipping meal was lack of money. Among the
farmers, 59.75% reported that finance determines what they ate. Fruits were
occasionally consumed by the farmers. Their highest monthly income was N1,000 —
N3,000. The nutrient intake of both male and female farmers were adequate in
calorie, protein, vitamin C, and Iron. However, among both sexes none of their
nutrient intake met FAQ requirement for calcium, vitamin A and niacin. The
results calls for increased dietary intake of these nutrients that are
inadequate in their diet.
