Knowledge Of Fruit And Vegetable Related Practices And Anthropometric Status Of Public Primary School Teachers In Umuahia North Lga, Abia State:- Onuoha, Nancy C
ABSTRACT
This
study assessed the knowledge of fruits and vegetables related practices and
anthropometric status of 223 public primary school teachers in Umuahia North
LGA, Abia State. We used a validated questionnaire and conducted anthropometric
measurements, including height, weight using standard procedure to evaluate the
teachers' health. The results showed that 87.6% of the respondents were female,
with 32.4% aged between 25-30 years. Most (97.2%) were of Igbo ethnic origin.
Notably, few teachers(4.8%) lacked adequate knowledge about the importance of
fruits and vegetables in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and their consumption
patterns revealed low fruit and vegetable intake. This deficiency may increase
the risk of overweight and obesity. Regarding BMI, 2.8% of teachers were
underweight, 18.6% were normal, 37.9% were overweight, and 40.7% were obese.
The findings underscore the need for interventions to improve teachers'
knowledge and practices related to fruits and vegetables, which can set an
example for students and promote community health. In addition, the chi-square
test demonstrated a significant relationship between teachers' anthropometric
status and their fruits and vegetables consumption patterns in Umuahia North
LGA, Abia State.
