ABSTRACT
The potential of centrosema pod for adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) ion from aqueous
solution was investigated in a batch adsorption process. The present study provides
information about adsorption of Pb(II),Cd(II), Ni(II) ion using centrosema pubescens
(butterfly peas) as adsorbent. The adsorbent studied exhibit high efficiency for metal ion
adsorption. Adsorption mechanism has been evaluated using adsorption isotherm models
(Langmuir,Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Flory- Huggins, Harkin- Jura). The
coefficients of determination of the models showed that Langmuir isotherm is the best fit for
the adsorption process. These heavy metals showed maximum adsorption at pH 6. These
results indicate that the adsorbent was found to be a promising alternative for the adsorption
of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions from aqueous solution. Thermodynamic parameters like
AG°, AS°, and AH° were also evaluated. The negative values of AG° indicate the process was
energetically feasible and spontaneous. Enthalpy values also showed the adsorption process
was an endothermic process and the positive values for AS° indicate increase in randomness
at the solid-liquid interface.
