ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to
examine the influence of safe learning environment on academic performance of
junior secondary school students' in Computer Studies in Ikot Ekpene L.G.A. A
descriptive survey research design was used for the study. Three research
questions guided the study and three null hypotheses were posited and tested at
0.05 level of significance. A 15 item questionnaire was designed using a four
point scale model and validated by three experts. The reliability of the
instrument was determined using Cronbach alpha formular that yielded a
coefficient of 0.66. This was administered to a simple randomized sample of one
hundred and twenty five students drawn from a population of students drawn from
five secondary schools in the study area. The result of data analysis revealed
that safety of the learning environment, interpersonal relationship between
teachers and students and supportive teaching and leering have significant
influence on the academic performance of students in Computer Studies. Based on
these findings, it was recommended that: teachers should consciously build
good, friendly interpersonal relationship with their students to allow them
ease and liberty to share their problems with them, thereby enhancing their
learning; rules and regulations be formulated, communicated and adequately
enforced in schools to prevent and check both physical and emotional/ verbal
hurts in order to ensure a safe learning environment in schools: moreover,
Computer Studies teachers should be exposed to regular seminars and workshops
in order to update and upgrade their skills and methods of lessons
[presentation and classroom management.
