Influence Of Varying Levels Of Dietary African Porridge Fruit (Tetrapleura Tetraptera) And African Sweet Basil (Ocimum Gratissimum) On Performance Of Turkey Poults
ABSTRACT
The influence of varying levels of dietary African porridge fruits (Tetrapleura tetraptera) and African sweet basil (Ocimum gratissimum) on the performance of Turkey poults were investigated in this study. The study was carried out for 8 weeks (56 days) where one hundred and five (105) turkey poults were used for the study. There were randomly assigned to 7 dietary treatments (0%, 0.045%, 0.08%, 0.12% of Tetrapleura. tetraptera and 0.04%, 0.085 and 0.12% of (Ocimum gratissimum) each replicated three times with 5 birds replicate in completely randomized design (CRD). Feed and water were provided ad-libitum throughout the duration of the experiment. Data collection on weight gain, feed intake, carcass characteristics, organ weight and economics of production were obtained duration the study. The result showed that there was significant (p<O.OS) difference in the average feed intake, feed conversion ratio only, also there was significant (p<O.OS) difference in all the cut parts and parameters measured while the economics of production showed that the cost of feed consumed, cost/kg gain and cost of production showed significant(P<0.05) difference within the treatment groups. The inclusion of the spices in turkey diet had no adverse effect on the performance of the turkey poults. In conclusion it was observed that turkey poults fed diet containing the Tetrapleura tetraptera and Ocimum gratissimum were similar to those fed without the test ingredients.Hence,the efficacy of Tetrapleura tetraptera and Ocimum gratissimurn should carried out in the further study.
