ABSTRACT

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of the different egg size from which birds were hatched had on the fertility, hatchability and performance of guinea fowl in terms of the linear body traits of two varieties of guinea fowl. The different egg sizes used were in categories A (25g-g) and B (37g-47g) with corresponding average hatch weight of 26. 19g and 31 .67g respectively. 56 Pearl and 49 Lavender hatched from 115 fertile eggs were used in a factorial experiment in RCBD design. The fertility and hatchability parameters measured were percentage fertility of the eggs, percentage hatchability of the eggs, number of dead in shell, number of keets emerged and number pipped. The growth traits measured were body weight, thigh length, shank length, breast length, body girth. Data were collected on two weekly basis. Efficiency of production was also evaluated using feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion ratio and mortality. Results showed that fertility and hatchability were low at the 1st batch of the eggs set and increased thereafter. The percentage recorded fertility and hatchability for egg size group B for Pearl variety and Lavender variety were 31.59 and 83.34, and 31.59 and 71.43 for batch 3 and 4 respectively. Egg size affected body weight positively (P.O.05) in most of other growth parameters studied. Pear birds from egg size groups A and B were found to perform better than Lavender birds from the two different egg size groups in terms of body weight. It is recommended that Pearl guinea fowl in group B with high initial weight be selected for breeding of meat type guinea fowl.
