ABSTRACT
This study examines the in-vitro
assessment of propolis from three different vegetation zones (f Nigeria and
determination of its flavonoids and ferulic acid contents. The objectives of
this study are to determine the flavonoids and ferulic acid contents of
propolis from the three vegetatioa zones and their relationship with microbial
activities. Different concentrations of propohs extracts (ethanol and water)
were prepared, media for the microbial growth were prepared using nutrients
agar for bacteria growth and sasourand agar for fungi growth .O.5m1 of the
cultured pathogen were introduced in a petri dish and 1 ml of each propolis
extract concentration were added. The bacteria plates were incubated for
24-48hrs while the fungi inoculated plates were inoculated for 2-5 days with
daily observation. On establishment of the growth, the plates were examined for
the presence of inhibition zone around each embedded disc. The result showed
that the flavonoids contents ranged from 8.76 to 10.33mg/lOOg with the derived
savanna having the highest flavonoid content.the ferulic acid contents of the
propolis samples ranged from 3.32 to 3.71mg/bOg with rainforest having the
highest ferulic acids content. the water extracted derived savanna propolis had
the highest effect on streptococcus spp at 500mg/ml this may be due to that flavonoids are the main propolis contents that makes it medicinal. The
ethanol extracted rainforest vegetation propolis gave the highest effect on
Aspergillus spp at 500mg1ntl concentration. In conclusion, the effectiveness of
propolis sample extracts increased with increa e in concentration. From this
study I recommend that modern beekeeping should be encouraged because propolis
comes from beehives.
