ABSTRACT

Value Added Tax (VAT) was introduced by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1993 to replace Sales Tax. The aim was to increase the revenue base of government and make funds available for developmental purposes that will accelerate economic development. The purpose of this study is to review the effect of Value Added Tax (VAT) on Nigeria economic development. In trying to find out the effect of Value Added Tax on Nigeria economic development, two main types of data i.e. primary and secondary sources were exploited and the information collected was successful through the help of the respondent. Descriptive figure of financial data was obtained from Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Statistical Bulletin. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistic, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Simple Regression Analysis techniques. The analysis showed that VAT revenue had a significant contribution to development of Nigeria economy during the study period. There are also highlighted problems hindering the success of VAT in Nigeria and some recommendations made.
