ABSTRACT

The study examined impact of information technology on its accounting system using first bank owerri branch as a case study. The study made used ofprimaiy data obtained thom 40 workers in first bank Nigeria Plc which cut across the management staff middle management staff' junior workers and customers in the hank using a well-structured questionnaire. Data obtained were analyzed using T-test techniques. The finding showed that impact of in/rmation technology on accounting system significantly and positively influenced accounting systems in banks. Also the result of this research is truly reflective of the application of information technology on the accounting sys tern of banks. The acquisition of signature verifying and document image processing system by banks, especialLy the new generation banks has given rise to efficient service deliver across the counter thus reducing the rate offraud and long queues in the bank. Final/v. it has been ascertained that the manual system is responsible for the long queues and delays in banking transactions but kudos to information technology/sr elimlnating these from the system. The study concluded that the application of information technology on the accounting system of banks is relatively low among old generation banks compared with new generation ones. The study recommended that efforts should be made by the management of first hank p/c owerri branch to embark on constant training and re-training of the computer professionals and other staff of the banks both local/v and important/v abroad in relevant areas of computer applications as the computer world is very dynamic and fast growing industry.
