Haematological Characteristics And Growth Performance Of West African Dwarf Goats Fed Oil Palm Leaf Meal - Cassava Peel Based Diets.
ABSTRACT
The haematological characteristics of
West African Dwarf (WAD) goats fed with three different diets were determined.
Nine (9) growing bucks aged 8-9 months with a mean live weights ranging between
8.10-10.00kg were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments composing (3)
three animals per treatment in a completely randomized design (CR1)). The
animals were fed 1kg/head! day of the diets. Treatment I served as the control
diet with 0% oil palm leaf meal while treatments II and 1H contained 15% and
30% oil palm leaf meal, respectively. The blood collection was done on the last
day of the experiment through the jugular vein and the samples were put into
well labelled bottles containing anticoagulant ethylene diamine tetracetic acid
(EDTA) and were analyzed for red blood cell (RBC) count, pack cell volume (PCV)
haemoglobin (1-tb), white blood cell (WBC) cunt; neutrophils, lymphocytes,
eosinophils and monocytes. Significant differences (P<0.05) were obtained in white blood cell (WBC) count, Packed cell volume and haemoglobin which ranged from 2.23- 3.48 x l0t, 23.00-32.33%, 7.50- 9.73g!dl respectively. The neutrophls and lymphocyte were also significantly different (P><0.05) while eusinophils and monocyte were not significantly different (P>0.05).
However, the results from Tables 4.2 and 4.3 suggest that the nutritional
health status of goats can be enhanced with the inclusion level of oil palm
leaf meal in dietary treatment III (at 30%) at a reduced cost.
