ABSTRACT
In order to determine the competence ofthe near
surface Formation as foundation materials of multi-storey complexes at Michael
Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike a Geophysical foundation study was
undertaken within the university premises. A total of 14 Vertical Electrical
Sounding (VES), using Schlumberger electrode configuration was carried out to
determine the nature of the subsurface materials. The geophysical results
revealed four distinct geoelectric sequences which comprises of topsoil,
weathered layer, medium grained sand and geoelectric basement. The topsoil's
composed of sandy clay/ clayey sand/ laterites while the weathered layer
composed of clay/sandy clay. The geoelectric section across the study area
shows the undulating nature of the basement topography with depth ofrock head
between 2 and 21 m. There is no evidence ofgeological feature such as
fracture/fault within the basement which can aid subsidence in the area. Based
on the results of the survey, the soils within which engineering structures
will be founded within the study area are competent in most ofthe areas except
few places with low resistivity value.
