ABSTRACT
Cowpea, (Vigna unguiculata (L) Wialpers, Fabaceae), is an important edible legume crop many parts of the world especially in tropical and subtropical regions. It is used as human food due to its high protein content (Dioug 2011), the high protein, amino acid and lysine contents ofthe seeds make them a natural supplement to staple diet cereals, roots, tubers and fruits (Somta et al., 2008) and also as livestock feed to make silage and hay. It is a drought tolerant and short warm weather crop well adapted to the drier regions where other food legumes do not perform well (Singh, 1987). It requires annual rainfall of about 750-1100 mm (Skerm, 1988).According to Oparaeke et al., (2000) yield losses in cowpea due to insect pests in Nigeria was estimated to be above 80%. C. maculatus infestation causes direct damage to cowpea grains causing loss of grains.
