ABSTRACT

This   research  work  was  undertaken  to  evaluate  of the  problems  and  prospects  of loan recovery  in Nigeria  commercial  Banks,  with  first Bank  of Nigeria  Pie  as  a case  study. The study  appraised  and determined   the  lending   procedures  of Banks  and examined  the effects  of fund diversion  on bad debts  of money-  Deposit  Banks  in Nigeria  commercial Banks.    Relevant   data   were   collected   from   both   primary   and   secondary   sources. Questionnaire  was the main primary  data collected  instrument  employed.    Population   of the study  was based  on the five region  administration  office,  with  above  three hundred and  ninety  four (394)  branches  in Nigeria.  The sample  size  was one hundred  and thirty six   ( 136).   Data  from respondent  were analyzed   and the research  hypothesis    tested  with Chi- square statistical.  From the analysis  it was found  that sound lending  requires a clear• well articulated  and easy accessible  policy  document  which  spells   out the philosophy   of lending.   On the bases of the above finding,  it was recommended  that Bank should  ensure that  loan  given  out  to  customers   should  be  backed   by  adequate   collateral   security. Finally,  the  researcher  recommends   that  the  management   of  the  money  deposit  Bank should  prevent  the  incident  of  bad  debts  in Nigeria   Banks  by ensuring   that  loans  are collaterized  and appropriate  monitoring  observed .
