ABSTRACT
An investigation was initiated to
study the litter production, relative stem abundance and nutrient contribution
of 3 major fallow species — Dactyladenia barteri, Anthonotha macrophylla and
dialium guineense to soil nutrient in four-year fallows farms in Olokoro
community. The study was replicated 4 times in Okwu, Agbama, Itu and Amizi all in
Olokoro. The major objective was to compare the species as organic matter
sources and mulch. The test involves collection of soil samples, litter samples
and enumeration of stem population per 10m2quadrat. Results show that the total
Nitrogen, exchangeable phosphorus and potassium varied from village to village
and from specie to specie. The NPK and organic matter under the various fallow
species were highest in Okwu and Amizi — 0.63%, 57.5 ppm, 0.992 me/I oog soil
and 13.237% respectively (for Okwu) and 1.59W0, 60.60 ppm, 1.009 me/bOg, 11.15%
respectively (for Amizi). Itu had the least amount of nutrient (N.P.K., OM) —
0.613%, 47.50 PPM, 0.748 me/bOg soil and 10.61% respectively). For the same
fallow length, D.barteri and D. guineense had significantly higher litter
accumulation of 579.8g and 514.og respectively than A. marcrophylla. D.barteri
had the highest mean relative abundance (RA) of 3.92% in Okwu where as in
Agbama, D.guineense had the highest mean (RA) of 36.90%. But in Amaizi, A.
marcrophylla had the highest mean value of 35.48% while D. guineense was the
most abundant in ltu (45.23%). It is therefore recommended that these fallow
species be properly harnessed and integrated with arable crops in an intensive
agro- forestry system to ensure sustainability of land use and continuity in
nutrient recycling.
