ABSTRACT
Monodora
myristica (Gaertn) Dunal is a useful but underutilized tropical tree belonging
to the Annonaceaefamily that has an astonishing array ofnutritional and
therapeutic qualities. There is a noticeable decline in its population within
its natural habitat resultingfrom anthropogenic activities and its resultant
change on the environment. Also, misidentification is unavoidable when using
these plants species because ofthe rising complexity ofplantstructure brought
on by environmental variables, hence, the needfor proper identification
oftaxonomic features and growth characteristics towards domestication and
large-scale production. Anatomically, germination and early growth studies were
carried out on M. myristica seeds obtainedfrom four (4) purposively selected
locations in Abia and Imo States. The method ofdata analysis usedwas a
3x4factorial experiment in CRD (Completely Random Design) and analyzed using
Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with the means separated using Latin Square Design
(LSD). Results showed that 32 days after planting was the dormancyperiodfor
seeds soakedfor six hours while non-treated seeds lasted for 35 to 38 days to
break dormancy. Percentage germination was best for seeds grown around a forest
environment. The findings of this research showed that it is recommendable to
adopt forest environment for early growth response ofM. myristica
