Effects Of Pretreatment With Different Acid Concentration On The Germination Of Dialium Guineese:- Onyeka Sophia U
ABSTRACT
This
study was carried out to determine the effects ofseed pretreatment with 98%
H2SO4 on the germination and early growth ofDialium guineese. The main
objective ofthe study is to determine the effects of different concentration of
H2SO4 on the germination ofDialium guineense. Dialium guineese is a multi
purpose tree used in the country but its propagation is affected by seed
dormancy. The need arises to identify means of breaking dormancy and increasing
germination rate. The seeds ofDialium guineese were tested for its viability
and treated with acid of different concentration namely: 0%, 30%, 50% and 70%.
The experiment was carried out in a complete randomized design and replicated
10 time The data was recorded within a period of 3 weeks. The data collected
includes: Germination percentage, Germination rate. Data collected were subject
to a generalized linear model. The results obtained shows that there is no
significant difference (p>0.05) in the germination and early growth of
seedlings of Dialum guineense treated with sulphuric acid at different level of
concentration. However, there is significant germination in the control
(untreated seeds). Information gathered during the course of this study shows
that acid treatment with H2SO4 may not be recommended for breaking seed coat
dormancy of Dialium guineense
