Abstract
The aim of this study was to
determine the effect size of previous findings on the effect of concept mapping
on students' academic achievement in Chemistry. Meta - analytic research which
adopted ex-post facto type of survey research design was used for the study.
Purposive sampling technique was used to draw 30 studies on effect of concept
mapping on students' achievement in chemistry. The data were collected using
coding instrument which was designed for this study. The reliability of the
instrument was found to be 0.72 using inter-rater agreement reliability.
Percentage, statistical transformations and effect sizes were used to analyze
the data for the research questions while winner combined test was used to test
the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study showed
among others that mean effect sizes for the 30 studies examined effect of
concept mapping on students' achievement in Chemistry recorded a positive and
large effect size(0.646). The mean effect of concept mapping on students'
achievement is significant at 0.05 levels. Based on the findings, it was
recommended among others that government through the Ministry of Education and
Professional bodies like Science Teachers Association of Nigerian and
Association of Educational Researchers and Evaluators of Nigerian should
provide in-service training, workshops, seminars and conferences for Chemistry
teachers on the teaching of Chemistry using concept mapping and as well as the
principles and processes of implementing the strategy in the classroom.
