Effect Of Upgrading By Different Breeding Methods On Performance And Growth Of Body Linear Component Of Muturu Cattle

A
total number of nine growing finishing cattle constituting of 4 (muturu x muturu)
; 3 (muturu x N'dama) and 2 (muturu x white fulani) calves averaging age cf
9-15 months of age were used in the investigation to study the effect of upg
ding using three different breeding methods on performance of the pure breed of
1r.uturu. Parameters measured included body circumference, body length, forelimb
(full length), head circumference, height at girth, head length, hind-limb (full
:ength), neck circumference, neck length, shoulder length, tail and ear length.
Analysis of the data obtained from parameters linearly measured from the three cross-!S
of muturu showed that body component correlated with weight gain (P<O 05)
and could be used to predict live weight of cattle. So the use of body linea
measurement to predict live weight where there is no scale should be encou
raged for breeding purposes. This will help to accelerate production of cattle in
Nigeria.
