ABSTRACT

 The effect of oral administration of ethanolic extract of vernonia arnygdalina.del on the exocrine functions of the pancreas was investigated. Administration of extract at doses of 500mgmg/kg body weight and 100mg/kg body weight produced weight loss of 4.85 ±,.3.55g and 6.025 * 6.32g respectively while the control gained 19.56 ± 16.44g. Serum amylase activity was elevated at a high dose of the extract (392.62 ± 35.22u/1) but remained unaffected at the low dose (105 + 28.12u/1). Serum chloride was elevated at the high dose (137.0 ± 19.80Meq/I) and the low dose(124.23 + 8.8lMeq/L) compared to control (101 + 3.3Meq/L) Mean relative pancreatic weight decreased from 0.00214 ± 0.000352 in the control to 0.00187 + 0.000394 in the high dose group but was unaffected in the low dose group. Total fecal Output increased from 330.6 in the control to 517.6g and 547.lg in the low and high dose groups respectively. Activity of fecal trypsin was not detected in the groups administered the extract but was detected in the control. Microscopic examination revealed the presence of fat globules and fatty acid crystals in the stools of the groups administered the extract. These indicate that the plant extract at high doses affect pancreatic function.
