ABSTRACT

Traditional medicine has been described as one of the surest means to achieve total health care coverage for the world’s population using acceptable safe and economically feasible methods. Diabetes is an umbrella term to cover a group of metabolic disorders characterized by insulin resistances and elevated blood glucose levels which can lead to hyperglycemia M. oleifera and M. lucida has been reported for its Antiinflammatory, Antiashmatic, Antioxidant and Antidiabetic potentials. This study investigated the effect of M. oleifera and M. lucida of alloxan-induced diabetic rat on biochemical indices, blood glucose, lipid profile, electrolyte and histology. Twenty-eight (28) wister albino rats weighing between 94.3-160.5g were used and arranged into seven groups comprising four (4) rats in each group. The first group was induced with diabetes and treated with ethanolic extract of M. oleifera at 500g/kg BW. Group 2 was induced with diabetes and treated with ethanolic extract of M. oleifera at 250mg/kg BW. Group 3 was induced with diabetes and treated with 500mg/kg BW. Group 4 was induced with diabetes and treated with 250mg/kgBW ethanolic extract of M. lucida. Group 5 was induced with diabetes and treated with 0.3mg/kgBW of danoil the standard drug. Group 6 was induced with diabetes and received no treatment while Group 7 was the control. The extract significantly (P>0.05) lowered the blood glucose level in alloxan induced diabetes rat. The effect of diabetes on group 7 was significantly low (95.1kg) in the final body weight of the rat compared to the group 1-6 which were high (185.85, 137.1, 128.7, 145.6, 120.55, 155.9mg/kgBW) respectively. However, the group 7 remained healthy throughout the study period. The serum electrolyte (Na', K*, CI, HCO;, Ca** and Pi) which was altered in the diabetic control was reversed in the treatment groups using M. lucida and M. oleifera at 250 and 500mg/kgBW. The M. lucida and M. oleifera ethanolic leave extract produced a significant anti-diabetic and antilipidemic effect on the treated animals.
