Effect Of Indirect Tax On Economic Growth And Foreign Direct Investment In Nigeria (2008-2018)
ABSTRACT
The study determined the effect of indirect tax on economic growth and foreign direct investment in Nigeria for the period, 2008 - 2018. Specifically, the study determined the effect of value added tax on foreign direct investment (proxy by FDI and GDP) and indirect tax on economic growth and FDI in Nigeria. Data were collected from the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin from 2005to 2018. The study employed the ordinary least square (OLS) multiple regression technique as the analytical tool. Findings indicated that value added tax has a positive and insignificant effect on FDI and RGDP in Nigeria, similarly, indirect tax has a positive and significant effect on real gross domestic product and FDI in Nigeria. Hence, the study concluded that value added tax and indirect tax have significant effect on RGDP and FDi Based on the findings, the study recommended that the government increase value added tax which will make the tax burden more bearable to the tax payers and attracts foreign investment to the country. There is need for Nigerian government to come up with investors friendly economic policies and macroeconomic adjustments that will lead to continuous increase in the willingness of investors by reducing indirect taxation.
