ABSTRACT

Twenty four adult Nigerian local cocks comprising 8 normal, 8 frizzle and 8 naked necks were use to determine the effect of genotype on morphometric differentiation of the reproductive organ and sperm reserves in the Nigerian local chicken. The semen were collected once per week using massage technique for six weeks and were examined for semen volume, concentration, motility and reproductive organs were evaluated. Results showed no significant difference (P>0.05) in the right vas deferens and left vas deferens of the three genotypes. Testes of both normal and naked neck cocks showed no significant deference (P>0.05). However, there were significant difference (P<0.05) between testes of frizzle cock from other genotypes. Mean values a SD) of semen evaluation of the genotypes were: Normal Cock: semen volume 0.25 ± 0.02, sperm concentration 270.50 ± 5.99 x i09sperm/mi, sperm motility 77.90 ± 2.10, Naked-neck: semen volume 0.24 ± 0.02, sperm concentration 250.50 ± 6.00 x i09sperm/mi, sperm 0 motility 65.80 ± 4.20, Frizzle cock: semen volume 0.15 ± 0.03, sperm concentration 198.50 ± 11.50 sperm/mi and sperm motility 52.50 ± 0.50 respectively. S igni fi cant positive (P><0 .05) correlation were observed between semen concentration and semen volume at week one and week six with genotype two (naked-neck), then correlation between semen concentration and semen volume with genotype two (naked-neck) were positive and significant (p>0.05), on all the genotypes at week fbur while a significant and negative
