ABSTRACT
The
sweet ripe, sweet unripe, sour ripe and sour unripe seedling of Gambeya albida
were sowed in four nursery buckets having five seeds each in a bucket. The
buckets were kept under a shade where they would get enough sunlight to aid
germination. At the 6th week after sowing, the sweet ripe had a height of 14cm,
sweet unripe 10cm, sour ripe, 13cm and sour unripe 8cm; the breadth ofthe
leaves for the sweet ripe was 3.4cm, sweet unripe 2cm, sour ripe 3cm and sour
unripe 3cm. The length ofthe leaves for the sweet ripe, sweet unripe, sour ripe
and sour unripe were 8cm, 3cm, 7.5cm, and 4.2cm. The number ofleaves were all 2
except for the sour ripe that was 3. At the 12th week the height of the sweet
ripe increased to 30.5cm, sweet unripe 30cm, sour ripe 28cm and sour unripe
30cm. The Breadth ofthe leaves for the sweet ripe, sweet unripe, sour ripe and
sour unripe were 4.5cm, 3.2cm, 4cm and 5cm. The length were 12.5cm, 11cm,
10.5cm and 13cm. The number of leaves were 6, 5, 5 and 7. The results of the
proximate analysis revealed the presence ofmoisture contents dry matter, crude
protein, ash, lipids, crude fibre, carbohydrate and energy value at varying
percentages. The sweet ripe showed the highest moisture content of 75.152mg/100
gram followed by the sour ripe at 73.069mg/100 gram. The unripe fruits had the
highest percentages of dry matter the carbohydrate and energy value in the
unripe fruits were higher than the carbohydrate in the ripe fruits. Vitamin
analysis revealed the presence of vitamin A, Bi, B2, B3, C and E in all the
fruit samples. The sweet ripe had the highest vitamin A content at
520.25lmg/lOOmg and was followed by the sour ripe at 314.731. The sour ripe had
the highest Vit. Bi at 1.301mg/100g and was followed by the sweet ripe at
0.801mg/100g. The heavy metal content of the unripe fruits ranged between 0.042
to 0.142mg kg"1 for lead, Zinc 1.404 to 6.10mg kg"1, Cobalt 0.061 to
0.11mg kg"1, Nikel 0.004 to 0.022mg kg"1, Chromium 0.001 to 0.002mg
kg"1, Copper 0.006 to 0.007mg kg" *, All values are within the values
