ABSTRACT

The research topic of this study is "The Effect of Computerized Accounting

System on the Performance of Corporate Firms — a study of Access Bank Plc,

Umuahia. The main objective of the study is to ascertain the effect of

computerization of accounting system on the performance of corporate firms.

To achieve the objective of the study, survey descriptive design was adopted.

The study population is 38 persons, which is made up of the staff of the bank.

The sample size is 38. The researcher made use of primary methods of

data collection which included questionnaire. This was designed and distributed

to the 38 staff of Access bank and the 38 distributed questionnaires were

completed and returned. The formulated hypotheses were tested using the One

Sample T- Test. The findings of the study shows that Computerized accounting

system is in. operation in virtually all commercial banks in Nigeria and its

adoption is .in line with the CBN stipulation for globalization, growth and

performance efficiency. It also shows that computerized accounting system is

known to virtually all staff of commercial banks in Nigeria and is considered a

mechanism of necessity, importance and relevance. Furthermore it reveals that

the major challenges to computerized accounting system are cost and literacy

level, thus, only literate persons and financially buoyant individuals can afford

computerization of their accounting system. Based on these, the researcher

recommended that bank staff irrespective of department should be subjected to

literacy training on Computer and its application, and computerization should

be adopted to ease and encourage payment and receipts electronically to

facilitate more transactions.
