Dietary Pattern, Nutritional Status and Prevalence of Hypertension Among Adults In Umuahia North L.G.A Of Abia State:-Elvis, Kelvin I
ABSTRACT
Dietary habit and nutritional status are recognized as a major determinant of health. The study was conducted to assess the nutritional status, dietary pattern and prevalence of hypertension among adults in Umuahia North Local Government Area, Abia State. A cross sectional study was conducted among 390 adults between the ages of 18-65 years. The study population comprised of 218 (55.9%) female and 172 (44.1%) male. Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) was used to collect data on dietary habits of the respondents. Data was analyzed using IBM SPPS version 20. BMI showed that 95 (24.4%) of the respondents were overweight and most of the respondents consumed grains occasionally (58.5%);starchy roots and tubers frequently (52.3%); legumes, nuts and seeds frequently (40.0%); vegetables frequently (100.0%); fruits occasionally (72.3%); sugar and syrup frequently (91.3%); milk and milk products occasionally (48.7%); meat and meat products frequently (60.0%); fats and oil occasionally (38.5%); non-alcoholic beverages frequently (60.0%); never consumed alcoholic drinks (62.6%) and frequently consumed miscellaneous food items like salt (55.9%). The study concluded that there is a low prevalent rate of hypertension among the adults. The importance of healthy dietary pattern and lifestyle cannot be over emphasized and therefore recommends Nutrition Education.
