Abstract
Regardless of the common use,
statistical significance test procedures and P-values have been misinterpreted
by authors and misunderstood by students in virtually every discipline. In
light of this need, the researchers delves into the development and validation
of an instrument for assessing students' correct conceptions and misconcep:ions
of p-values and statistical significance to improve the quality of research in
tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The study adopted instrumentation design. It
was carried out in University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State College of Education and
Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic in Akwa Ibom State. The population of the study
comprised of 7, 520 research students in the three tertiary institutions in
Akwa Ibom State. Purposive sampling was used to select sample size of 120
students used for the study. To guide the study, four research questions were
posed and four hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of
significance. The instrument for data collection was the statistical
significance and reasoning about p-value rating scale SSAPRS. The internal
consistency reliability coefficient of the rating scale revealed 0.85
reliability. Data from the research subjects were analyzed using factor
analysis, Cronbach's alpha, mean and standard deviation, analysis of variance
(ANOVA), post hoc test and t-test statistic. It was found out that there was
significant difference in the mean scores of the three ability groups (High,
average and low competent). Post hoc revealed that there was a significant
difference in the mean scores of the high ability and average ability. It was
therefore recommended that statistical literacy should be stressed in the
introductory courses and that literacy may be necessary to demonstrate
statistical reasoning or thinking about inference. In addition to stressing
statistical literacy, statistics educators might target instruction and
assessment to address prevalent inferential misconceptions for introductory
research students.
