This study was carried out to
determine the contribution of snacks to the Energy and nutrient intake of under
graduates in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike. To achieve the
objective of this study, a cross sectional survey was carried out using a total
of two hundred respondents (106 males and 94 females) who were randomly
selected. Two hundred (200) pre-tested and validated questionnaire were used to
obtain information on socio economic characteristics and food habits.
Anthropometric characteristics were also assessed which included Body mass
index (BMI), weights kilogrammes (kg), heights in metres (m), mid arm
circumference in centimeters. Energy and nutrient intake data were also obtained.
Weighed food intake was carried out to get the nutrient intake of the
respondents. The information from the questionnaire was analyzed using the SPSS

intakes and less than 50% of their protein intake. Contribution of snacks to
calcium intake was very low for male students (27.4%) and low for females
(40.1%). Over 50% of their iron and Ascorbic acid intakes were derived from
snacks. It was recommended that since all students took a 200 level course in
nutrition, education on choice of nutritionally superior snacks such moi-moi,
okpa, fruits, vegetables and meaty snacks should be included in their snacks.
