ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine various conflicts management strategies among secondary school principals in Akwa Ibom State. The population for the study is 1292 teacher’s which comprised all the 256 public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State. A sample size of 460 respondents which comprises of 156 principals and 304 teachers were selected through Taro Yamen mathematical formula. The sample size of 460 represents 50% of the study population. proportional stratified sampling techniques was to select fifteen (15) schools from each of the zones that make up the education zone in Akwa Ibom State. The study adopted a correlational research design. Four research questions and four null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance to guide the study. Two instruments were used for data collection which are Conflict Management Strategies Questionnaire. (CMSQ) and Administrative Effectiveness Questionnaire (AEQ). The instruments were validated by three experts from College of Education, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike of which two of the experts are from the Department of Educational Management (specialized in Educational Administration and Planning) which one expert is of the Department of Science Education (specialize in Test and Measurement). Cronbach Alpha method was used to test the reliability co-efficient which gave a reliability co-efficient index of 0.74 for CMSQ and 0.72 for AEQ. The findings indicated five conflict management in Akwa Ibom State secondary schools. These strategies were divided into proactive and reactive conflict management strategies, which includes, good governance, negotiation, mediation, collaboration and good communication. The findings showed that good governance conflict management strategy has a very high extent relationship with principal’s administrative effectiveness. The findings also indicated that among others, the relationship between good governance conflict management strategy and principal administrative effectiveness is significant. It was recommended that principals should adopt those management strategies in order to ensure effective administration.  The researcher recommended among others that conflict management strategies should be taught in the department of education in higher institutions so that management students may acquire adequate conflict management strategies before they graduate.
