Comparative Study Of The Impact Of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) On The Economy Of Nigeria: A Tri-Sectoral Analyses
ABSTRACT
The work made a comparative study of
the impact of foreign direct investment on the Nigerian economy over the period
1981-2013 with particular emphasis on the growth of the real sectors of
Agriculture, Manufacturing and Commerce. The study tows the empirical line and
adopts the ex post facto research method. Dataset covering a 34-year period
(1981 to 2013) was collected and studied. FDI served as the dependent variable
while GDP (proxy for economic growth) and the contributions of the real sectors
to economic growth were used as independent variables. The classical linear
regression model, correlational analyses complimented by descriptive statistics
and other diagnostic tests were used as the methods of estimation. lt was found
out that foreign direct investment positively and significantly impacted on n
only the Overall Economic Growth of Nigeria but also the growth of the ethereal
sectors of Agriculture, Manufacturing and Commerce meaning that as more Foreign
Direct Investment finds its way into the economy, it leads to an increased
level of growth; It is therefore recommended that the government should duly
orchestrate policies that would attract foreign direct investment to the
Nigerian economic environment. This is because of the catalytic role that FDI
plays in economic growth.
