ABSTRACT
This study intended to determine the comparative effect of two selected teaching method via conventional(chalk and talk) and practical method on student's achievement in physics at secondary school (SS 11) in Umuahia North Local Government of Abia State. To guide the study two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated. A non-equivalent control group quasi experimental design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 1203 SS 11 students in fifteen secondary schools in Umuahia North LGA. Two intact classes from two secondary schools were selected to give a sample size of 100 students. A researcher developed instrument named physics achievement test (PAT) was used to generate data for the study. The instrument was validated by two experts in the Collage of Education at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike. The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to analyze the data obtained. The finding of the study reveals that there are significant difference between academic achievement of students in physics when taught with conventional method(chalk and talk) and practical method. It is recommended among others that physics teachers should be properly trained by government through workshop and seminars on the important use of teaching method which are appropriate to the different teaching and learning situation.
