ABSTRACT
Physico-chemical
and heavy metal characteristics of Akor and Anya Rivers were investigated. The
Rivers were sampled for seven months (February –August), 2019 and analysed
following standard procedures and protocols. The results revealed that there
were no significant differences (P > 0.05) among all the investigated
physico-chemical parameters across stations within a river and between the
Rivers. Mean values of all the investigated physic-chemical parameters were
below standard set by FMEnv set mean except COD which exceeded its standard in
both Rivers. Spatio-results revealed that turbidity, TSS, TDS, and all
cat-ions(Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ ) including PO4, NO3
and SO4 were high during the rainy season months but water
temperature, pH, DO, BOD were higher during dry season months. Heavy metals
contents were also higher in rainy season with no significant difference (P
> 0.05) across station in each River and between the Rivers. All the heavy
metals (Iron, Lead, Manganese, Chromium, Cadmium and Nickel) were high above
set standard by Standard Organisation of Nigerian (SON) for drinking water
except Copper and Zinc contents which were above the set limit during some
months in rainy season but were above the standard set by FMEnv except for Zn
which were within the standard.Water quality index results revealed that both
Rivers are at good status, water quality index (WQI) ranged between 54.50 and 52.70% in Akor Rivers while in
Anya River, WQI ranged between 49.78 and 66.83%
