ABSTRACT

Breeding trials was carried out on R. Phoenicis, one of the species implicated in Entomophagy among the people of Umuokpo Community in Obingwa L.G.A., Abia State. This was done using locally sourced materials such as sugar cane, plantain peels, coconut, bread and chi-exotic juice. The materials were dried and ground into powder and mixed in different proportions. The experiment was carried out in replicates. Fresh sugarcane was also used. Adult of R. phoenicis obtained from the wild were placed at a sex ratio of one male to two females in a perforated plastic container and pieces of split sugarcane were added to be used as food and lying substrate. They were renewed every three days. Two of the first stage larvae harvested from the split sugarcane were placed into the mixture of three substrates in different perforated containers. The number that survived and moved to the next developmental stage was recorded the survival rate of R. phoenicis on the listed substrate did not record significant difference (p 0.43). The edible species including R. phoenicis cuts across three orders namely: Coleoptera, Lepidoptera and Orthoptera.
