ABSTRACT
In a study the blood profile of
West African Dwarf (WAD) goats fed graded levels of DPW in fermented cassava
peel meal based diets were evaluated. Four diets designated A, B, C. and D were
formulated to contain 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% DPW respectively and samples were
analyzed for proximate compositions. The diets were offered to the WAD goats in
a 4x 4 Latin square design during a 28-day feeding trial. Blood was sampled by
collecting 3mls via jugular veino-puncture at the end of each phase of the
feeding trial. The samples were used to evaluate both Haematology and Serum
biochemistry of the goats. Result shows that the Dry matter (%) and crude
protein of the diets were 90.27, 19.71%; 90.22, 19.81%, 89.54; 20.47% and
89.37; 22.4% respectively for A, B, C and D while the metabolisable energy were
l .59MJ/kgDM, l.54MJ/kgDM, l.49MJ/kgDM. and 1.51 MJ/kgDM. Average feed intakes
(kg/d) were statically (P< 0.05) significantly for the four diets. Diets A,
B, C, and D recorded 0.87 (kg/d, 0.84, 0.88 and 1.25kg/dl respectively. The
PCV, WBC, MCV, MCHC, were statically (P< 0.05) infulenced by the dietary
treatments while Hb, RBC, and MCH, were unaffected statically (P> 0.05).
Diets A, B, C, and D recorded 28.00%, 39.00%, 27.00% and 33.00% for PCV
respectively. The WBC (x10/l) values were 10.00(x 10/l), 11.38(x 10/l), 10.10(
10°/l) and 6.40(x 10/l). Also, MCV, (FI) values were 27.83Fl, 32.02F1, 27.22FI
and 30.39F1 while MCHC (g/dl) values obtained were 20.00g/dl, 22.05g/dl, 28. l
5g/dl, and 23.94g/dl for diets A, B, C, and D respectively. Apart from the
blood urea (mg/di) values, all the other serum biochemical components varied
statically (P< 0.05). Total protein (g/dl) values were; 4.20g/dl, 5. 10g/dl,
4.58g/dl, 4.39g/dl, and Globulin values were; 2.40g/dl, 3.19g/dl, 2.44g/dl and
4.25g/dl respectively for diets A, B, C, and D. The creatinine (mg/di) values
ranged from 0.92-1.27mg/dl, while the glucose 46.00-73.33mg/dl. Also, the total
bilirubin (mg/di) and dried bilirubin (mg/dl) values ranged from 0.46-0.55mg/dl
and 0.28mg/dl respectively. It was obsevered from this result that the addition
of DPW in FCP based diets did not have any negative effect on both the blood
profiles evaluated and the health of the WAD goats; hence these feed resources
should be harnessed for efficient goat production.
