ABSTRACT
24 weaner pigs were used to
assess the blood constituents and organ weights of weaner pigs fed graded level
'of combined yarn peel and sweet potato peel meal in a maize-based diet. They
were allocated to four dietary treatments. Each treatment was replicated thrice
and each replicate had two (2) pigs in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD).
Diet one (1 )was maize-based diet, while combination and yam peel meal replaced
maize quantitatively in diet 2,3 and 4 at 5%, 10% and 15% levels respectively.
In ratio3:2. The proximate % and gross energy composition of the test fed
stuffs (combined sweet potato peel and yam peel meal) were as follows: crude
protein 9.11% ether extract 1 .20%,crude fibre3 .47%,' ash 6.89%, dry matter
89.10% and gross energy 3.010 (Kcal/kg). The anti-nutritional factor in
combined sweet potato and yam peel meal were as follows: hydrogen cyanide
(Mg/kg) 0.23%, phytate 0.56% tannin 0.46%,and Heamagglutinin 0.47mg/hu. The
organ weights showed significant differences (p<0.05) in all the parameters measured except for heart and lungs. The weight of spleen did not follow any specific pattern that could be attributed to the effect of the test ingredient. The weights of the lever and kidney of the test diet were higher than that of the control diet., For haematological parameters there were no significant differences (p><0.05%) in a11 the parameter measured except for WBC which was within the normal range of WBC of weaner pigs. The blood chemistry value of pigs in all the diets, were within the normal range of biochemical values for weaner pigs. It was concluded that there were no deleterious effect of values on the blood constituents (Haematology and biochemical indices). However the enlargement of the kidney and liver of pigs placed on the test diets, made suggest that weaner pigs could not tolerate the test ingredient beyond this level. ><0.05)
