Assessment ofthe Insect Fauna, Pestilence and Management on Forest Plantation: A Case Study Of Forestry Research Institute Of Nigeria (FRIN), Abia State:- Ihekweme, Amblessed C
ABSTRACT
This
study was undertaken to assess the insect fauna, pestilence and control on
forest plantation at Forestry Research Institute ofNigerian (FR1N), Abia State.
Three different plantations were selected and surveyed for a period of three
months, the plantations surveyed were Tectona grandis, Irvingia gabonensis and
Baillonella toxisperma. Survey was done between the hours of 8am to 12pm due to
available time needed to carry out the survey. Insects encountered were
collected using a sweep net, identified and photographed. A total number of 21
insect species belonging to 7 orders and 16 families were recorded during the
survey in all the plantations. Fifteen insect species were recorded in Tectona
grandis plantation and fourteen each on Irvingia gabonensis and Baillonella
toxisperma. Some insect pests were also recorded which were mostly leaf
defoliators. Control measures used in eradicating such pests were insecticides
and fungicides. The tree seedlings were treated with insecticides and
fungicides to help eradicate insect pests. Most of the trees when grown up are
not given much pest control as some develop resistance to pest themselves.
Therefore, a routine insect abundance and diversity monitoring in the forest
facility as well as conservation of all biodiversity supported by the habitats
in the forest facility is hereby suggested.
