ABSTRACT
The study on
assessment of phytochemical and proximate composition of some selected
medicinal plants leaves was carried out to detennine the medicinal value of the
leaves of Anonna muricale, Peasea americana and Mangfera indica. This research
aims at assessing the health beneficial constituent of the leaves of these
selected plant species. The study review related literature, and samples of
these leaves were collected and were subjected to laboratory analysis using
standard methods. The result of the phytochemical composition showed 1.38%, of
Tannin 1.96% of Alkaloid, 0.85% of Flavonoid, 0.37% of Phenol, 1.24% of
Saponnins and 0.27% of Phytate in Magnfera indica leaves, 0.5 1% of Tannin.2.
26% of Alkaloid, 0.44% of Flavonoid, 0.04% of Phenol 1.33% of Saponnins and 0.26%
of Phytate in P. americana, and 0.34% of Tannin,1.4 8% of Alkaloid, 0.26% of
Flavonoid, 0.18% of Phenol 1.28% of Saponnins and 0.30% of Phytate in A.
muricata The result of the Vitamin composition showed 13.20mg of Ascorbic acid
(vitamin C), 0.38mg of niacin (vitamin B3), 0.21mg) of Riboflavin (vitamin B2),
0.48mg of Thiamine ( Vitamin Bi) and 22.6opilo0g of icarotene in the leaves of
M.indica, 8.80mg of Ascorbic acid (vitamin C), 0.29mg of niacin (vitamin B3),
0.15mg of Riboflavin (vitamin B2), 0.52mg of Thiamine (Vitamin Bi) and
115.50j.t/loog .carotene in the leaves of P.americana. and 8.36mg of Ascorbic
acid (vitamin C), 0.41mg of niacin (vitamin B3), 0.17mg of Riboflavin (vitamin
B2), 0.39mg of Thiamine (Vitamin Bi) and 43.25.t/100g 3.carotene in the leaves
of A.muricata. In analysis of mineral composition the result also showed 4.41%,
of Calcium,1.58% of Magnesium, 0.550% of Potassium 0.230% of Sodium, 0.400% of
Phosphorus, and 2.60% of Nitrogen in Magnfera indica leaves, 3.61%, of
Calcium,1.280% of Magnesium, 0.600% of Potassium 0.1.85% of Sodium, 0.38% of
Phosphorus, and 2.87% of Nitrogen in P. americana leaves and of 4.20%, of
Calcium,1.70% of Magnesium, 0.485% of Potassium 0.225% of Sodium, 0.275% of
Phosphorus, and 2.98% of Nitrogen in Anona muricata leaves. Proximate
composition showed 20.10% of Moisture Content 8.24% of Ash content, 10.60% of
Crude fat, 16.25% of Crude protein, 4.30% of Ether and 2.60% of Nutrititve
value, 60.6 1% of carbohydrate and 346.14 Kcal of Calorific value in Magnifera
indica leaves. In the analysis there are presence of 21.14% of Moisture Content
5.60% of Ash content, 6.58% of Crude fat, 17.94% of Crude protein, 3.84% of
Ether, 2.87% of Nutritive value, 66.04% of carbohydrate and 370.48 Kcal of
Calorific value in P americana, leaves. There are also the presence of 16.58%
of Moisture Content 5.96% of Ash content, 7.24% of Crude fat, 15.74% of Crude
protein, 2.98% of Ether, 2.52% of Nutritive value, 65.56% of carbohydrate and
352..02 Kcal of Calorific value in A.muricata leaves. They are of nutritional,
clinical and veterinary relevance considering the diverse ethnopharmacological
uses of the plant in different parts of the world. And more research should
continue on the potential of these leaves to make substantial finding on the
recommended application and use
